Private Lesson Teachers
(Studio Teachers)
- Many of the faculty members from BGSU, Findlay, Owens, Adrian, UT, etc. are available for private lessons; those with whom we have had a recent school director/private teacher relationship are listed here. This should not be considered a definitive list; we are striving to provide information as we are able.
- Students and parents are advised that college faculty often, but not always, have more advanced training than other teachers. If so, they are apt to charge a rate appropriate to their training and experience; this is considered normal in our field, but the lesson fee may be higher than you expect.
- Be sure to ask for his/her per lesson rate, and whether they prefer payment by lesson, by month, or by semester. Also, it would be a good idea for you to ask if there are any “PSEOP” options for private lessons at their college or university, if it applies. (It never hurts to ask!).
- Often, it is advisable to schedule a “trial” lesson or two with a new teacher – as long as you both understand that it IS a trial. That way, if you do not seem to “connect”, there is the option to continue looking for a suitable match between you and a studio teacher.
- Once you have decided to commit to a teacher, be sure to understand clearly his/her lesson attendance policy. They want to see you succeed; however, these are very busy people. They will expect you to display a strong sense of responsibility – any unplanned absences on your part usually costs them part of their weekly/monthly income. Be sure you have the correct phone or email contact info for him/her. Store it in your phone, too.
- With any private teacher, expect to be asked to provide your own lesson books, solos, duets, etc. For percussion, be prepared to purchase your own mallets, sticks and perhaps a stick bag.
